Remodeling your kitchen is one of the most exciting and rewarding upgrades you can make to your home. A new kitchen brings fresh functionality, beauty, and value to your space, and it’s often the heart of daily living. But as thrilling as the transformation can be, it’s important to recognize that a kitchen remodel is also a major undertaking. It requires careful planning, expert craftsmanship, and, perhaps most importantly, a clear understanding of the overall timeline of the remodel.

At Clar Construction, we specialize in delivering seamless, high-quality kitchen remodels in Central Vermont. With over two decades of experience, our design-build team knows how to expertly guide clients through every step — from initial consultation to the final walkthrough. Our proven process works to keep projects on schedule, produces exceptional craftsmanship, and brings your vision life with precision and care.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through a typical kitchen renovation timeline, breaking down each stage so you know exactly what to expect and how to plan.

How Long Does a Kitchen Remodel Take?

One of the first questions homeowners ask when planning a kitchen renovation is: how long does a kitchen remodel take?

While every project is unique, the average timeline typically falls between 8 to 16 weeks once construction begins. However, depending on the size of your space, the complexity of the design, and a few key variables, the full process from initial planning through completing the final details can span several months longer than the construction phase of the project.

Key Factors That Impact the Kitchen Remodel Timeline

Several important factors can influence the overall length of your kitchen remodeling process:

  • Size of the Kitchen:
Larger kitchens generally require more demolition, more cabinetry, more flooring, and more detailed installations — all of which can extend the project timeline.

  • Scope and Complexity of Work:
A simple cosmetic upgrade (like replacing cabinet doors and countertops) will be quicker than a full gut renovation that reconfigures the floor plan, moves plumbing, or upgrades structural elements.

  • Custom Features and Specialty Work:
Custom cabinetry, high-end finishes, and bespoke millwork elevate a kitchen’s beauty — but they also require longer lead times for fabrication and installation.

  • Backlog of Contractor Availability:
Contractors are often very busy and it typically is not feasible to expect your remodel to begin as soon as many homeowners might wish it to.  Whether it’s the backlog of your Contractor’s availability or providing enough time to allow for special orders (like cabinets) to arrive before beginning production, it’s important to give the process the time it deserves so as not to rush it.

  • Material Availability:
In today’s remodeling environment, material lead times can vary. Items like specialty tiles, stone countertops, custom appliances, and hardware might have extended delivery timelines, which must be factored into the planning phase.

Kitchen Remodel Timeline: A Phase-by-Phase Breakdown

Understanding each phase of the kitchen remodel timeline can help you feel more in control throughout the project. At Clar Construction, we believe that a well-communicated process leads to a smoother, less stressful remodeling experience. Here’s what you can expect at each major stage:

1. Initial Consultation, Design, and Preliminary Estimating (6-16 Weeks)

Every successful kitchen remodel starts with a thorough planning phase. During this time, you’ll meet with your design-build team to set the foundation for your project.

Initial Consultation:

The initial consultation is a time for you to share your vision with us.  We’ll want to know what about your home isn’t working for you and how you wish it would function differently.

For example, do you wish the kitchen was more open to the Living Room or Dining Room? Do you want an island for guests to gather around?  We’ll listen to your thoughts and offer some of our own.  It is always helpful to come to these meetings with a target budget in mind.  We don’t expect clients to necessarily know what the budget for a project should be but we would expect you to have a sense of how much you’re going to be comfortable spending.

Setting a realistic budget early is critical. We’ll help you prioritize your must-haves and nice-to-haves, balancing design ambitions with practical considerations.  We’ll steer the conversation in a direction that honors your target investment amount.

Preliminary Estimating:

After the initial consultation we’ll take some time to consider what we think a responsible budget would be for the scope of work we discussed at that first meeting.  We will provide you with that rough, preliminary estimate at no expense to you so you can consider if it makes sense to continue the conversation.  Perhaps it makes sense to, perhaps it makes sense to alter the scope in some way to better suit your needs, or perhaps it doesn’t make sense to continue the conversation at all.  We want you to have a reasonably accurate sense of the level of investment necessary before you start spending money to plan your project in earnest.

Project Development Agreement:

If you choose to proceed in the process we now enter into our Project Development Agreement.  Our design team translates your vision into preliminary layouts, 3D renderings, and material suggestions. During this phase, you’ll begin making key selections — like cabinet styles, countertop materials, flooring, and fixtures — which are crucial for moving into the next stage.  We will help steer your choices in the right direction, often suggesting materials for you to consider.

Note:
This phase can vary in length depending on how quickly decisions are made, how complex the design is, and how backlogged our design team is.

2. Planning and Estimating (3–6 Weeks)

Once the design is just about finalized, the focus shifts to preparing for construction. This critical behind-the-scenes phase ensures that everything is lined up before the Carpenters and Subcontractors arrive at your home.

  • Finalizing Design, Construction Plans and Price:
Your design is polished into a set of detailed construction drawings and specifications. This step ensures clarity for everyone involved — from tradespeople to building inspectors to owners.  With this clarity we can produce a fixed price for the established and agreed upon scope of work.

  • Signing the Construction Agreement
After we review the scope of work together, the price associated with that scope of work and you are comfortable with both of those things, we will sign the Construction Agreement .

  • Securing Necessary Permits:
Depending on the scope of your project, building permits may be required. Permitting ensures that all work is compliant with local building codes, and timelines can vary based on municipal processing speeds and requirements.

  • Ordering Materials and Custom Products:
With final selections in hand, we place orders for all materials — including custom cabinetry, countertops, lighting, and plumbing fixtures. Ordering early helps avoid delays and price increases down the line, especially for high-demand or custom items that may have longer lead times.

3. Demolition (1–2 Weeks)

With designs finalized, permits secured, and materials ordered, it’s finally time to break ground — or in this case, break down! Demolition marks the beginning of the visible transformation of your kitchen.

  • Prepping the Site for Work:
Before demolition begins, we take critical steps to protect the rest of your home. This includes setting up dust barriers, floor coverings, and designated pathways to minimize disruption and keep your living spaces clean and safe.

  • Removal of Existing Cabinetry, Flooring, and Fixtures:
Our skilled team carefully dismantles existing cabinets, countertops, flooring, appliances, and outdated fixtures. If walls are being removed or reconfigured, we handle that demolition at this stage as well. We also take care to salvage any materials you may want to reuse or donate.

Kitchen demolition is loud, messy, and exciting — it’s when you’ll first see the bones of your new kitchen emerging. Rest assured, Clar Construction manages this phase swiftly and respectfully, keeping the work area organized and minimizing inconvenience to your daily life.

4. Framing and Rough in (2–4 Weeks)

Once demolition is complete and the site is cleared, the next critical phase begins: rough construction and infrastructure installation. This is where your kitchen’s internal systems take shape.

  • Framing:
Any structural changes  such as moving or adding walls, installing new support beams, or adjusting window and door openings are completed first. This ensures the layout you envisioned becomes a reality.

  • Plumbing, Electrical, and HVAC Rough-Ins:
Behind-the-walls work is critical to a successful kitchen remodel. Our licensed tradespeople install or relocate plumbing lines, electrical wiring, outlets, lighting boxes, and HVAC ductwork to match your updated design. This stage sets the foundation for your appliances, lighting, and utilities to function as intended.

  • Inspections Scheduled and Completed:
After rough-in work is finished, inspections are scheduled with local building officials. These inspections verify that all systems are safe, code-compliant, and built to last. Passing inspections is essential before walls can be closed up and finish work can proceed.

Important Note:

This phase may feel slower to homeowners because much of the work is hidden behind walls, but it’s one of the most important stages for the long-term success and safety of your kitchen renovation.

5. Finishes (3-5 weeks)

Now the exciting part begins, seeing your kitchen truly take shape!

  • Cabinetry Installation:
With the infrastructure work complete and walls closed up, our expert carpenters carefully install your new cabinetry. Whether you’re opting for custom-built cabinets or high-quality semi-custom lines, precise installation ensures clean lines, proper leveling, and a flawless fit. Cabinet installation provides the backbone of your new kitchen’s look and function, setting the stage for countertops and fixtures.

  • Countertop Templating and Installation:
Once the base cabinetry is installed, technicians create exact templates for your countertops. This step ensures a perfect fit, especially around sinks, appliances, and unique corners. Fabrication of materials like quartz, granite, soapstone, or butcher block typically takes a few weeks after templating, which is then followed by professional installation.

  • New Flooring Laid Down:
Timing the floor installation depends on the project details. In most cases, hardwood or tile flooring is installed either just before or just after cabinet placement, depending on the design and material selected. Our team ensures precise craftsmanship, proper transitions, and durable finishes that will stand up to years of use.

At this stage, your kitchen will really start to look like a finished space — and it’s incredibly rewarding to see all those design choices come to life!

6. Fixtures, Appliances, and Final Touches (1–2 Weeks)

The final stages of the kitchen remodel timeline bring all the details together, transforming the room from a construction site into a functional, beautiful kitchen.

  • Plumbing Fixtures Installed:
Sinks, faucets, pot fillers, garbage disposals, and water filtration systems are installed by our licensed plumbers, bringing water and drainage back online in your new space.

  • Lighting and Electrical Fixtures Installed:
Pendant lights, recessed lighting, under-cabinet lighting, and decorative chandeliers are wired and installed, bringing warmth, functionality, and ambiance to your kitchen.

  • Appliances Set Up and Connected:
Your new appliances — including the refrigerator, range, dishwasher, microwave, and any specialty equipment — are delivered, installed, and connected. Our team works with the owner supplied appliances to ensure proper hookups for gas, electric, and water lines.

  • Final Paint, Trim, and Hardware:
The finishing touches make all the difference. Final coats of paint are applied to walls and trim, crown moldings and baseboards are installed, and cabinet hardware (knobs and pulls) are attached. Every detail is refined to create a cohesive, polished look.

7. Final Inspections and Walkthrough (1 week)

The final stretch of the kitchen remodel timeline is all about ensuring that every detail meets our high standards and, more importantly, yours. At Clar Construction, we believe that a project isn’t complete until it’s absolutely right.

  • Quality Checks:
Before we invite you for a formal walkthrough, our project manager and site team perform ongoing assessments of quality. We review every element — from cabinet alignment and hardware installation to paint touch-ups, appliance hookups, and fixture performance — to ensure everything is functioning properly and finished with exceptional craftsmanship. We don’t just look at the obvious; we scrutinize the small details that make a custom kitchen truly outstanding.

  • Client Walkthrough and Completion List Creation:
Once we’re satisfied internally, we invite you to walk through your new kitchen with us. During this walkthrough, you’ll have the opportunity to inspect the space, ask questions, and point out any areas of concern. Together, we create a “completion list” — a short checklist of minor items that may still need attention, such as paint touch-ups, hardware adjustments, or additional cleaning.  At the end of this meeting we’ll be in agreement that upon completion of our mutually developed list the project will be considered complete.

  • Final Adjustments and Project Wrap-Up:
After the walkthrough, our team quickly addresses the agreed upon items to ensure your kitchen is 100% complete to your satisfaction. We handle these finishing touches with the same level of precision and care that we apply throughout the entire project. Once the list is completed, we’ll do a final cleaning, remove all construction materials, and hand over a fully transformed kitchen, ready for you to enjoy.

At Clar Construction, we pride ourselves on not just completing projects — but completing them beautifully and thoughtfully, with a personal commitment to your happiness and peace of mind. We consider your kitchen remodel a success only when you’re delighted with the results.

Common Delays in a Kitchen Remodel Timeline

Even with the most detailed planning and expert project management, some delays can arise during a kitchen renovation. Being aware of potential setbacks and knowing how to handle them can make a big difference in keeping your project moving forward with minimal disruption. Here are the most common causes of delays in the kitchen remodel timeline:

Back-Ordered Materials

Custom cabinetry, windows, doors, specialty tiles, and appliances can come with longer lead times. Global supply chain issues can also cause unexpected back-orders, pushing the timeline out of critical items that aren’t available when needed.

Solution: At Clar Construction, we recommend selecting and ordering materials early in the planning phase. Having key materials on hand before demolition starts is one of the best ways to avoid project delays.

Change Orders (Scope Changes Mid-Project)

Once construction is underway, sometimes homeowners decide to make changes — like adding additional work, upgrading finishes, or altering the layout. While flexibility is part of a good remodeling partnership, change orders inevitably impact both the schedule and budget.

Advice: To minimize mid-project changes, we encourage detailed upfront planning and clear decision-making during the design phase. However, if you do decide to pivot, Clar Construction’s team will work with you transparently to update the timeline and keep the project on track.

Weather (If Structural Work Is Involved)
If your kitchen remodel includes exterior work — such as expanding the footprint, adding a bump-out, or altering the roofline — weather can play a significant role. Rain, snow, and freezing temperatures can cause delays in framing, foundation work, or exterior finishes.

Planning Note: In Vermont, we schedule structural work strategically to account for seasonal weather patterns, reducing the risk of serious delays whenever possible.

Tips to Stay on Schedule

A well-organized kitchen remodel doesn’t happen by accident — it’s the result of careful planning, proactive decision-making, and a strong partnership between you and your remodeling team. Here are key tips to help keep your kitchen remodel timeline on track and avoid unnecessary delays:

  • Work with an Experienced Design-Build Team (Like Clar Construction!)

Choosing the right partner is the single most important factor in ensuring a smooth and efficient remodel. An experienced design-build team like Clar Construction brings both design and construction expertise under one roof, streamlining communication, minimizing errors, and maintaining momentum from start to finish.

With over 20 years of experience in Vermont, our team knows how to anticipate challenges, create detailed project schedules, and deliver craftsmanship without compromise — all while keeping you informed and confident throughout the process.

  • Make Selections Early

One of the most common causes of remodeling delays is late or indecisive material selections. Cabinets, countertops, appliances, flooring, lighting — each choice impacts ordering lead times and installation sequencing.

  • Minimize Change Orders

While it’s natural to tweak small details as your vision evolves, major mid-project changes — such as altering the layout, upgrading fixtures, or requesting custom work — can significantly disrupt the schedule.

By investing time upfront to plan thoroughly and think through your priorities, you’ll reduce the likelihood of costly and time-consuming change orders. And if adjustments do become necessary, Clar Construction will work closely with you to integrate them smoothly and transparently.

  • Communicate Regularly with Your Remodel Team

Open, honest communication is essential to any successful remodel. Stay engaged throughout the project by attending scheduled meetings, responding promptly to questions, and voicing any concerns as they arise.

At Clar Construction, we prioritize consistent updates and collaborative discussions, so you always know where things stand. A strong partnership ensures that small issues are caught early — before they become bigger problems.
