Historically Accurate Modern Addition

Expanding History: Seamlessly Enhancing a 1920s Home for a Growing Family

With their family growing, these owners needed some additional space and like many homeowners, they decided to invest in their home instead of moving. This is a beautiful, well built home from the 1920’s and it was important to the owners that an addition honor the craftsmanship and aesthetic indicative to the original architecture.  Amongst other reasons, this focus made Clar Construction a good fit as we shared that value.

OVERVIEW: 1st Level

The entry area is ample in size to accommodate everyone’s seasonal clothing, shoes, skis, and fishing gear with Vermont slate flooring that will stand up to all of the traffic it will handle.

The updated first level bathroom is comfortable and finally not attached to the kitchen the way it used to be.  It utilizes a stock cabinet with custom marble countertop and backsplash, along with some super fun wallpaper.

We were able to carve out some space for an extremely useful and efficiently organized pantry with cabinetry details that speak to the history of the home.  The quarter sawn white oak countertop beautifully caps off the birch cabinetry.

OVERVIEW: 2nd Level

The second level owners suite now extends an existing bedroom into a closet/changing room, and full bathroom with walk-in shower, soaking tub, sinks, and commode.

The basketweave marble flooring ties nicely in to the marble countertop, shower, and tub details while the white oak cabinet brings the warmth of the original woodwork into this otherwise lighter space.
