The owners have a remarkable commitment to doing right by this 1808 Farmhouse and have undertaken an extensive remodel much of which they are doing themselves! We were contracted to remodel the kitchen and living room, make extensive structural repairs and modernize the previously dirt-floored basement into an updated space with proper moisture management and insulation.
Like many of our projects it was of the utmost importance to the owners that the work to be completed on their home be consistent with the thoughtful details of 200+ years ago.
Kitchen Renovation: A Thoughtful Blend of History & Functionality
Custom Cabinetry: Precision Craftsmanship with Period-Authentic Details
After carefully removing the existing conditions, including the compromised wood-framed floor, we crafted a custom-built kitchen that embodies the essence of a historically appropriate remodel while offering modern functionality.
The painted inset cabinetry features a modified face-frame detail, setting the tone for a space that respects the past while meeting contemporary needs. The soapstone and quarter-sawn white oak countertops create a stunning contrast, enhancing the warmth and authenticity of the space.
A standout feature is the larder, a large cabinet designed to keep small appliances within reach yet hidden from view. Inside, custom oak shelving and brackets provide a beautiful accent against the painted interior. Adjacent to the larder, the hutch and pantry are designed with ventilation holes in the cabinet doors—an authentic farmhouse detail that nods to the craftsmanship of 200+ years ago.
A Workhorse Island & Vermont White Oak Flooring: Beauty Meets Functionality
The furniture-style island, painted in a striking yet soft hue, is both a prep workhorse and a seating area, bringing flexibility to the heart of the home. Open white oak shelving and painted wood walls offer a functional yet visually striking way to display the homeowners’ curated collection of kitchen tools and heirloom vessels.
With natural light pouring in from the windows, the Vermont White Oak flooring, milled by Vermont Plank Flooring, completes the space, creating a timeless kitchen that seamlessly integrates history and modern convenience.
Living Room Restoration: A Timeless Blend of Warmth & Heritage
A Historic Fireplace Reimagined
The original fireplace, a stunning focal point of the living room, posed significant safety concerns. To preserve its historic charm while enhancing functionality, we carefully removed the existing conditions and framed new walls with metal studs and fire-resistant details. The result is a traditional masonry fireplace that not only accommodates a wood stove but also anchors the space with its classic aesthetic.
The slate hearth and handcrafted wooden mantel contribute to the room’s authenticity, striking a balance between bold presence and refined craftsmanship. Above the fireplace, a muted green paneled wall with accent lighting casts a soft glow, highlighting the homeowners’ carefully curated décor—including hand-forged candleholders, vintage pottery, and framed artwork.
Thoughtful Materials & Historic Details
Designed to complement the adjacent kitchen, the living room incorporates Vermont White Oak flooring, milled by Vermont Plank Flooring, adding warmth and reinforcing the home’s historical integrity.
Beyond aesthetics, the restoration extended to the home’s structural integrity, addressing two sides with new insulation, historically accurate windows, wood siding, and period-appropriate trim. The homeowners’ choice of a crisp white paint scheme accentuates the sharp architectural details, ensuring the home’s original 1808 character remains beautifully intact.
Together, the kitchen and living room renovations reflect a deep commitment to honoring this home’s past while preparing it for the future—a seamless fusion of historical craftsmanship and modern livability.
